Frita Batidos

Tonight I ate at a place I've been wanting to try for awhile: Frita Batidos, a Cuban inspired restaurant in Ann Arbor. Its claim to fame is that it's owned by a woman who was on Top Chef. (Side note: having never seen that show, I almost called it America's Next Top Chef just now. Close call.) It has a really interesting look:

Kinda trippy looking since that second picture is tilted, huh? In real life it's not tilted, so don't worry. I mean, unless one of your legs is a lot shorter that the other. In which case, this is what it will look like to you. But anyway, picnic tables instead of regular tables. Different, huh? I liked it. It felt like summer (about a half hour later, the place was packed, by the way).

But the surprises didn't end there. When my drink arrived, it was in a bag. A bag with a straw sticking out. Kinda looked like the bags hanging from IV's. I put it in a cup which made it look like it the cup had a muffin top.

When my food arrived (a chorizo burger), it had the fries inside, which made it look suspiciously like a character from Pirates of the Caribbean.

In conclusion, the place was full of surprises, and I'd have to highly recommend it. I plan on going there more in the winter since the inside looks like a tropical vacation spot. It's especially fun when enjoyed in the company of good friends! The food was great too, all joking aside.

I mean, if you can get past the idea of eating Davy Jones' face (joking back on).

Ha! Weird stuff... Although they very often give you your drink in a bag in Thailand. I figured it was because so many people rode mopeds or bikes of some kind, and, no cup holders, so...drink in a bag! (With handles.) Looks like a fun place!! And thanks for turning the joking back on. I got a little worried for a moment there...

I have to say, the environmentalist in me thinks this is a waste of a plastic bag, even if it's unique. I 'm a little surprised this flies in Ann Arbor. I'm starting to think that town has a major obsession with Cuban food! As a Top Chef devotee (up until the current Top Chef Desserts which is kinda annoying) I read up on Eve's switch to this restaurant but forgot about it. I will have to check it out one of these days so I'm glad you reviewed it!

Hahahaha!!! I think I just laughed loud enough to worry about waking sleeping roommates. That was flipping funny! Loved your comparison of the fries...

Me hace querer hablar en espanol. I love the Davy Jones comparison; so true! Ha! I'm not sure I would be keen on going back to elementary school to eat (We had picnic bench style tables.) If ever in SLC go to the Red Iguana, that would really take you back to Houston.

I just looked her up. Eve Aronoff, 6th season of Top chef. She got booted after the 2nd round of the show (out of 14 rounds). I'm only willing to go to a restaurant owned by a Top Chef contestant who's placed at least 9th in their respective season. I'm kidding. The food looks really good.

A bag drink?! That's just crazy.
I went to Pittsburg once and had a sandwich with fries inside. It was a very popular thing and tons of people recommended it. It was very tasty.
