You know what they say about people who assume? That they shouldn't do it. (That's what they say, right?)
On my way home from work yesterday, the Weezer song "Island in the Sun" came on the radio. It got me thinking about how I pretty much just assume everyone likes Weezer. I'm sure that can't be right, yet I can't remember meeting anyone who doesn't like them. And that's usually the first thing I ask someone when I meet them.
There are lots of things I assume though, and when my assumptions are wrong, I'm always caught off guard.
I think I've told you guys this story before (that's how strongly it's impacted me), but I remember a time when I found out a friend of mine didn't like pizza. Pizza! This was a guy I thought I knew. Suddenly I had no idea who he was. Didn't like pizza!? Why? I had so many questions. He answered them all with a shrug.
Here are some other things I assume.
Things I assume everyone likes:
Weezer
Pizza
Ice cream
Summer
Flowers
The Beatles
Things I assume everyone dislikes:
Nazis
Papaya
Ohio State
Chupacabras
Perez Hilton and Paris Hilton
Lady ghosts*
The word "phlegm"
I assume some of you are up in arms right now about something on my list. I assume I'll get some angry comments. I assume I'll enjoy them.
What are some things you assume?
*Some people have asked about this, so to clarify, lady ghosts = female ghosts. They're scarier than male ghosts. I don't know why. I just know it's true.

I dislike everything but Perez and Paris.
Perez recently turned over a new leaf and stopped his hating. I can give you details in a msg if you want.
I think Paris is extremely smart - again I can explain in a message.
In what sense do you assume that people don't like chupacabras? I don't like being attacked by chupacabras, but one of my favorite thing to talk about is chupacabra attacks. So in that sense, I like chupacabras.
My classmates think it's hilarious that you mention Weezer, because I once made a blanket statment in the office: "Fact: All Mormons like Weezer." Also, all Mormons like Coldplay.
I totally agree with pizza, too. I'll have to write my thought on that soon.
Other than the papaya thing, I can generally agree with your statements here.
I agree with movingluggage that all Mormons like Coldplay. Except me. And all of the other Mormons gang up on me and tell me why I should love Coldplay. Coldplay and Harry Potter.
What!? People don't like the Chupacabra? Personally, I am fan, I even have a Chupacabra t-shirt to show my appreciation. My favorite urban legend... or is it??? I should show you my shirt some time...
Your post was quite thought provoking and I was busy thinking up assumptions, like I assume all people beleive we really did land on the moon.
Then I was fasincated by the comments. I had no idea all Mormons like Coldplay. I am going to go Google that now.
Ditto Brady's comments about Chupacabras. I'm just a big fan...
Haha, that's pretty funny about Mormons liking Weezer and Coldplay. I can agree about Weezer, but I can't really get into Coldplay, personally. They're not my favorite.
Oh, and when it comes to chupacabras, it's more chupacabra bites that I think people don't like. Talking about them and saying the word chupacabra is clearly awesome.
I'm surprised people didn't know what a lady ghost is. Of course a lady ghost is a female ghost. Duh. Also, round the Durkin house, we assume everyone hates Michigan and LOVES Ohio State! And we are right.
Hmm...Kara, does Sandy feel that way? Somehow I doubt it! ;)
You don't like papaya?!?! I am BEYOND offended right now. It is one of the most succulent and sweetest fruits God did give. I have heard that papaya and Mango were the food referred to as Manna in the scriptures! IN THE SCRIPTURES! I was totally taken off guard because you had warmed me up with a little Weezer chit chat, and I thought I KNEW YOU.
I'm with you on papaya, unless it's unripe and in somtum (a spicy Thai salad). I think other than that I agree with your assumptions! I did go through a period of not liking the Beatles (I felt like I was bombarded by them from several friends), but got over it.
I always assumed that Lincoln Logs were named after Abraham Lincoln, but found out earlier today just how wrong I was! They were actually invented by Frank Lloyd Wright's son, John, who named them after his father's given middle name, Lincoln (Frank got rid of that name after his father abandoned them, and took on his mother's family name, Lloyd). As you say, I really shouldn't assume...
I'm going to have to agree with Karajean here on the Ohio State/UM issue, except we have a divided household. We can't assume anything when it comes to football rivalries.
I wish I would have know the Weezer assumption! My non LDS brother did a concert where they played the whole blue weezer album from cover to cover as a fundraiser. I would have invited more people!
Rivers Cuomo is sooooooo nerd-cute!
I don't like Weezer, probably because I remember the Beatles.
I agree with Brady on the chupacabras, except with Nazis. Villains I love to hate.
Lady ghosts are scary because I find anything female terrifying.
I assume that everyone hates the word nausea as much as the word phlegm. And I also assume that all of my family knows that pretty much any Peter Paul and Mary song is my "Desperado". Peter sang at the ark this week. Wish I could have been there!
I think summer depends on your location. Arizona summer are no bueno and I always disliked Houston summers.
Weezer? Who is weezer?
Papaya me gusta and a lot.
An admirer from the distance.;)
I feel like I'm not Mormon when all Mormons are supposed to like wheezer and coldplay... apparently I'm not fully aware of the requirements, but then again I may I just don't know who or what these are.
I assume you are crazy when you think others like summer. It's enjoyable from the beach or pool... I'm all for fall; it's the beginning of wonderful things, Anniversary, Thanksgiving, Christmas...
I assume your funny... and of course I'm ALWAYS right! And I assume that the not so secret admirer from a distance will come forward in this century... let's see if I'm right about that too:D
Not fair. If you are going to assume, it can make that out of you, but why do you have to drag me into this?! I don't want to be that!
They say assuming makes an a@@ of you and me.
Haha, yes, anonymous, I know. ;)
Oh, I just ASSUMED on Monday that we'd be coloring Easter eggs for the FHE. I left pictionary early.
I was shocked when I found out the hubs didn't like Weezer. He is the first (and still only) person I know that doesn't like them. It's insane. How do you not like Weezer?!
Soft fire makes sweet malt.
