A New Year's Resolution

A friend of mine wrote on her blog at the beginning of 2012 that rather than make a New Year's Resolution, she likes to come up with a theme for the year. Like "make" or "move." I really liked this idea and thought about applying it to 2013. However, I couldn't decide on one word only, so I decided a phrase would be better for me. After thinking long and hard about it (by which I mean, occasionally thinking about it whenever it came to mind), I decided that my phrase would be "Try new things."

I have some specific new things in mind, some of which I'll share now, some I will keep to myself for now. Some ideas: try rock climbing, figure out ways to make money from blogging, maybe do a mini-triathlon (gulp), read some classics I haven't read yet, travel to knew places, and maybe even watch the Goonies for the first time.

For 2012, my New's Resolution was to learn how to French braid. I made a feeble attempt once, but it turns out I have zero interest in French braiding. It just doesn't appeal to me. I have no need for it in my life at this point.

I did do some new things though, and they really enriched and entertained me. Things like: Going to the Grand Canyon, making and selling almost 100 hula hoops, running my first 5K (and doing 3 more races after that), bicycling in the Tour de Troit, holding (but not shooting) a gun for the first time, going to the Oswald bear ranch in the U.P., camping in the U.P., and doing lots of new crafts. It was a fun year.

I am excited for 2013. I have a good feeling about it. What approach do you make to New Year's Resolutions? Do you do them? Do you keep them? Do they work for you?

My word this year is grow. I also recently heard about the idea of making 30 for day resolutions instead resolutions for the whole year. So I am going with that approach. This month one of mine is to finish 4 craft projects I started. Try new things sounds great! Hope I can try some with you!

I think you do wonderfully at doing new things, but it's certainly something you don't want to put aside. And I'm all about the Goonies!

Our family them for last year was I can do hard things, I think the kids did better at it than I did, but I have improved on loving myself and I'm glad I have, because I feel the Lord's love more and I feel my love for others growing. One of my favorite years was just working on finishing things I started and not starting new projects until I did. Okay it was only about 50/50, but I felt such a weight lifted and I decided that I could just pitch a few of them. Of course my favorite was the year I was married, we made it a goal to attend the temple once a month. Best blessings.

I've found I do far better at with a word or an aim so I can feel that I've improved and tried and not find fault with myself because I did something imperfectly.

This year we're working on gratitude. Not just be humble and saying thank you, but if we're grateful we share, we don't complain, we work hard, we take care of what we have, etc.

My life-time resolution is to lose weight and keep it off. But short-term I really want to allow myself to sit and read more. There are always chores, but for my mental health, I need to sit and read and not feel guilty. I'm much happier when I do.

My NY goal is to find where I'm supposed to be. I used to set really detailed and specific resolutions, but they stressed me out. So now I'm more of a theme girl, too! :) I'll try new things with you, too!
