Pwned

May I vent a little? Get ready for the most curmudgeonly post you've ever heard from me. This is the post where I show my true age (which is 80).

I think it's time for certain phrases and slang to be retired. I've recently reached my limit with the following:

FTW (for the win!) Enough already. Does anyone really feel comfortable using this? I question this whenever I see it at the end of a Facebook status update - is anyone using it correctly? I'm not saying I know how to use it, I just don't get it. I really don't get it.

pwned - Annoying. Mildly amusing at first. Lame now.

"just sayin'" - I know you're just sayin.' That's what sayin' is. I reached my limit with this one this morning. I can't take it anymore. For awhile there it was kind of funny, cute, whatever. But it's use as "no offense" is taking over Facebook status updates.

"Some people don't know how to drive! Just sayin.'"
"Certain ex-boyfriends need to get a life! Just sayin!'"
"I love meatballs! Just sayin!'"

Enough. I know you're just sayin' when I hear you sayin.'

I was kind of worried people would be offended by this post, but you really can't be because I'm just sayin.'

What are you tired of?

(It's possible I have a "case of the Mondays"...)

My gripe is similar, but more about texting annoyances...like, is it really that much faster to say "I'll txt you" versus "I'll text you." No, it is not. When did vowels become optional?

This is particularly upsetting because I see the generation of kids who have grown up with this "language," and they spell so many things wrong, or actually have the nerve to put "IDK" in a homework assignment!! AARRGGHH! :)

I agree with these and many more I hear on a daily basis being in the company of many teenaged students.

For example they will shout out, "That's what she said." After almost anything.

I have to admit at first it was funny. Not anymore.

Not offensive. Just hilarious!

"I love meatballs! Just sayin!'"

Haha I love it.

I might the huge mistake of telling my 14 year old brother about the slang "word" (abbreviation? disaster?) "roflcopter." Don't worry, I never use this myself. It was in one of the essays I had to read in my English class- the essay was about the degeneration of language.

Big mistake. It is his new favorite word.

Very true! Along the same lines, one of my current "language obliteration" pet-peeves is when people write (or say, which is even worse) "prolly", instead of the word probably. So annoying. If they're trying to sound like a 3 year old trying to learn a new, difficult word, ...mission accomplished!

Agreed!!! Those are really so totally lame-spice. I mean, OMG!! Ugh. OK, I can't even joke about "lame-spice" or "OMG" without feeling nauseated!! It's time they were gone!!

ewwwwwwww I hate "Just Sayin". Thank you for posting this. I want people to just stop just sayin!

The truth is that texting is obliterating the English language. And it is now showing up in all other aspects of life... speech, homework, statuses, etc. And I don't even know what pwned (or whatever the title of this blog was) even means. I also don't know what FML means... In fact, I frequently find myself doing some mental head scratching over abbreviations. And, yes, it is all extremely annoying.

Elizabeth Downie said...

FML means "Eff my life." I'm glad I didn't know that one and had to look it up. haha

Oh man, I have "just sayin'" but here's what I hate more: 'nough said, or nuff said, or anything other disgusting variation. I Can. Not. Stand. When people say any of these. You immediately sound hick and it's just ridiculous. Ugh haha I feel old saying it but they're just stupid!

I really really don't like it when your talking to someone, and they say, "right on". ugh! And I HATE it when people refer to things they're impressed with as "wicked" or "wicked sick".

This is one wicked awesome post! (j/k Kathy)

I think it's total bunk when people say "Just sayin". Lame-o!

Is Angela telling us she's pregnant?

Elizabeth Downie said...

Yeah, I think that's what she's saying! I guess she wanted to make sure everyone who reads this blog knows about any inconsistencies with her cycle.

I have a friend that has replaced OMG with OMJ - IDK if IL if you know what I mean.

An admirer from the distance. ;)

I don't like using LMAO. It's kind of inappropriate. I rather use LOL.

Valen Hunter said...

Oh oh how about this one " I know, right?" I always say "no" in reply.

Oh yeah and as someone mentioned above "lame-spice" or stupid-spice...or anything that comes out of the mouth of Busy Bee Lauren Blog I find quite annoying.

I think a congrats is in order for Angela (or not, she sounded kind of mad)

I'm posting again because I thought of another. Fo-Shizzle!. I think it's funny when I say it, or you or kat, but not anyone else. I don't know why. It just bugs, for-shizz.
