I love you?

What is an acceptable response to "I love you" when you can't say it back? Apparently laughing isn't an option. Ideas? Funny responses would be best. What do you think of "thank you"?

(Don't be feeling too sorry for any guy here, by the way, as his statements of love aren't overly genuine. This is all in good fun.)

I wouldn't even know. My niece always says, "Thank you." It cuts through my heart haha

Ok ok, so I know you said that laughing isn't an option, but I have resorted to the "friendly giggle." The "friendly giggle" let's you sound like, "Oh, you're just too sweet," when you're REALLY thinking, "Oh, this guy is a nut!!" I've gotten away with it before, but don't tell anyone!

"Aight."
"And I love spending time with you!"
"Aces!"
"Really?"
"Insanity runs in my family, you know."
"I'm moving to China."
"You have something hanging from your nose, you know. It's actually been there all night, but I didn't want to embarrass you by saying anything in front of other people."
"Aw, you're like a brother to me!"
"Uh, hang on, I think someone's calling me..."

While we will hesitate to laugh, it's important to the know the context of the situation.

If it is a serious moment and he seriously thinks he means that he loves you, like proposal love moment, I think it's perfectly ok to say, "I'm sorry, but I don't feel the same."

If he's trying to be funny or it's relaxed, It's probably ok to say "thank you" but be careful. If he calls you out on it you need to be honest.

Or, if you want to be a little sarcastic yet not lie to him, you can whip out the, "Working on it!" line. This can let him know that you don't want to say it, but you're not totally shutting him down.

You can laugh with your girlfriends when you talk about it later on.

Thanks for the advice, Ryan. In this particular case, there's no way the guy can expect me to really take him seriously so his statements of love seem to come out of left field. That's what makes me laugh. But I need to come up with a better response. ;)

"And your name is...?"

Didn't Garth always say "Thank YOu" in Wayne's world to that one dude that kept telling everyone he loved them? Garth was just like "just say Thank You " to everyone who was confused by it or didn't know what to say.

haha, you are SO right, Melissa! I just watched that recently. I'm always impressed when someone has a good Wayne's World reference. Thanks for that. :)

"I appreciate that" or maybe "that's sweet". Of course there's always, "I know, I'm irresistible" or "Fancy that!" or perhaps "If you must, you must"

Good luck! I LOVE YOU!

I'd stick a smile. This could go either way: I don't believe you or that's sweet or wouldn't that be nice or me too I just can't say it. I mean a smile is vague and means whatever everyone wants it to mean. :)

How about.."That's cause you're smart enough to know a good, talented, amazing, friend when you have one!" Covers all bases, compliments him, let's him know where he stands and keeps it light.
And I love you and your snuggie blog!

In the many times it happens to me a day, I usually respond "I love me too".

What about, "I know". Hans Solo famously replied to Leia's "I Love You" that way.

Funny about how most of these responses are advice on shutting someone down, who may just be a super nice person. Some of us don't say they love anybody. Some of us are free with it and say it often. I prefer to be around people who aren't so stingy.

Ah man, this post made me laugh.

A proper response if you can't say it back would be a kiss?

haha.
