Grandma Says

Last night during my weekly visit with my grandma, she was lamenting that she can't do as much as she used to now that she's mostly confined to her wheel chair. One of the things she feels most upset about is that she can't make her bed some days. I told her not to worry about it, that I rarely make my bed. Her shocked reaction would make you think I'd just told her I don't even own a bed.

She said, "Well THAT'S going to have to change when you get married!!!"

I said, "I know." But then I wondered why I said that. I guess I've always figured I'd make my bed when I get married, but why? To impress my husband? Because it's more grown up to make your bed? Because my mom has always made her (and my dad's) bed?

I'm not sure.

I'm not a total slob. I wash my bedding once a week, and every time I wash my bedding, I make my bed neatly. But as the week goes on, it becomes more disheveled. I usually pull the covers up before I leave for the day, but I don't make it look all neat. Is that bad?

I just think this:

looks a little more more inviting and comfortable than this:

What do you guys think? How many of you regularly make your bed? When I get married, do I have to make my bed?

I would much prefer having my bed made to unmade - it instantly makes my room (and therefore my life) feel more organized. But I also hate making my bed. I got a duvet and started using it European-style (no additional covers, washing the duvet cover just as you'd wash sheets) just so that I wouldn't have to make my bed any more - I just have to straighten the duvet. It's great! (And since I married someone who is also not a bed-maker, I feel no post-marital guilt about not making up the bed perfectly every single morning.)

When we first got married I never made the bed and Jim was shocked. Lol. He always made his bed when he woke up. I tried to do it but would get busy...but then his family would come over and see my bedroom and that frustrated me (and sometimes they would say something about it.) So now I make it most mornings..just in case someone stops by..lol.

Rule in our house is that whoever gets up last makes it, but I'm usually up last and Andy usually surprises me before I get to it. I don't really care what it looks like, though it's nice to have something feel tidy. The reason I make my bed (or have Andy do it) is because then I can at least not wrestle the whole night over which 1/2 is mine. I sleep with a death grip on the blankets.

I have to have a made bed. I like to get into sheets that are straightened out. Even if my husband gets up last and just sort of straightens it, I usually go back later in the day and neaten it up. I love grandma's reaction. Makes me laugh!

The second picture looks like sheets neatly folded over some cardboard boxes. Like a cake that's just a layer of frosting on a block of styrofoam.

I'm definitely a bed-maker. I like to have nice, straightened sheets to crawl into (though maybe not as extreme as the second picture). Like Amy, it helps me feel more organized, which I hope then carries over into the rest of my life!

Most days. Definitely every other day. I always straighten the bed after activities that ahem dishevel it. I was with a person that regularly washed his bedding though, almost as often as I just made the bed. So I do the daily tidying and let someone else do the major cleaning.

HECK NO! In fact my boyfriend took a look at my bed one day and said "I'm so glad you don't make your bed every day because I don't either. It's so dumb when you're going to mess it up again to get in it and no one sees it."
Word.

Matt's a bed maker. I'm not. But I just read something that said it's the single most impactful thing you can do for your own happiness. Seems pretty overblown but it did get me thinking I should make the bed more. haha

You don't have to make the bed when you are married for the following reason: if he's not a bed maker, he won't care if it gets done or not. If he is, he'll be in the habit and do it himself.

the only reason i make my bed is because the rest of my room is cluttered! and when i lived in small rooms in college (oh wait, i still do) i NEEDED a clean space to sit and read/do hmwk, or whatever. i also don't use a top sheet so all it takes to make my bed is to pull the blanket straight and put the pillows in their spot.
