Wednesday Thoughts

I'm trying to break myself of the habit of using too many emoticons. That and writing "lol" whenever I feel the need to assure the reader I'm kidding. I used to think "lol" was so lame but somehow I started using it and now I can't stop. I've turned into a 13 year old girl. And I'm definitely not "lol-ing" as often as I write it.

It's like I've lost all faith in my reader that he/she will know when I'm kidding (lol), when I'm figuratively winking ;), or smiling :), or sad :(. I'm a bit nervous about ridding myself of my trusty emoticons, but I think I'm going to throw caution to the wind and go for it. (And here's a good rule: if you're not sure whether or not I'm joking, I probably am.)

Anyway, in other thoughts, the poll for "is it ok to argue on a first date?" is over, and the results are:

Yes 6
No 2
Depends 13
Absolutely 3

I must say, three of you said absolutely!? I feel like there's a story behind that vote, and if there is, I want to hear it.

Those are really all the thoughts I have so far today.

Happy Wednesday.

I know it's probably a typo, but your first sentence, "I'm trying to break myself of the habit of you using too many emoticons," cracked me up. I'm totally going to start telling people that I'm trying to break myself of their annoying habits.

In high school, I was all snobbily opposed to emoticons until my girlfriend and I started getting into fights because she couldn't tell when I was kidding. That's when I started employing the winky face, but I felt dirty about it.

My favorite use of emoticons/textspeak, however, is my friend Ben responding to something I said with:

BEN: lol
BEN: That's not "laughing out loud." That's little cartoon Ben throwing his arms up over his head in frustration at your lousy humor.

Hahahah! It was totally a typo. I fixed it. Thank you. But I do like the idea of breaking myself of my friends annoying habits.

You felt dirty about it...that's hilarious.

Funny post. Reminds me of an argument I got in with my sister once, who actually thought emoticon was pronounced "emoshcon." Lame.

so you're telling me I've been pronouncing it wrong? Oh silly me!
lol! :) rofl ;-) hehe ~ ;--)

I find myself using the smiley face emoticon ALL THE TIME. Even when I write emails to my students' parents. I don't want to come off too bossy or overly-serious. And, with my friends, I use it for everything...to soften a harsh critique, to make a joke that might not otherwise come across, to emphasize a sarcastic remark. I don't think I can give it up!! :)

I feel embarrassed by the amount of emoticons I use online and in texts, but sometimes I feel people wouldn't detect my sarcasm otherwise. Also, I feel like I'm very emotional/enthusiastic in face-to-face conversation, and I have to convey that digitally with emoticons.
Plus, it's a scapegoat way to respond to someone when you have no idea what to say in words. :D

I refuse to give up emoshcons, especially since you are trying to break me of it. :( I love <3 them! They convey emotions that are hard to convey IRL. :I ;) :P Plus I like to give flowers. @--/-- Take that! :O
