Blessed Union

I have been one happy camper this weekend. Why, you ask? Well, since you asked, it has everything to do with the holy matrimony of the Beatles and iTunes. With a union like that, who even cares about Prince William and whats-her-name getting engaged? (I still can't believe my secret fantasy of marrying Prince William has been permanently dashed, but I'm trying to move on...)

When I was in college, I worked as a server in country club restaurant. I remember one night, one of the other servers was doing an informal poll, "who is the best band ever?" Everyone he'd ask would pause and say, "well, it has to the the Beatles, doesn't it?" It was unanimous at the end of the night. No one could come up with a band who could be better than the Beatles. Over the years, I've decided that Led Zeppelin is a close second, but still not quite at the same level as the Beatles.

Anyway, yesterday I got on iTunes and made a little album of my current favorite Beatles songs. I was like a kid in a candy shop so I had to work hard to reign it in and start out with 12. Here are the 12 I chose.

1. Here Comes the Sun
2. Rocky Raccoon
3. Hey Jude
4. Lovely Rita
5. In My Life
6. Strawberry Fields Forever
7. Something
8. Blackbird
9. Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite
10. Helter Skelter
11. I am the Walrus
12. A Day in the Life

There are many others I love that didn't make the list like Yesterday, Here There and Everywhere, and Across the Universe. They will be added in the future though, so don't feel too bad for them.

What are your favorite Beatles songs? Maybe we could "come together" in the comments section now and discuss (I can't believe I made that stupid joke but I'm gonna leave it).

Wow. I can't believe you made that joke, either. ;) You picked some great ones! Blackbird, Across the Universe, I am the Walrus, and Hey Jude are among my favorites, too. It's so hard to choose! I like your list!

I LOVE the Beatles. I come to this point from a different background than you - having been a teenager (not the screaming and sobbing kind) when they first came to the U.S. So I still like some of their first songs like "I Saw Her Standing There". But I like a variety of their songs, some of my favorites being: "If I Fell", "Here There and Everywhere", "In My Life", "Across the Universe", "Hey Jude" (we used to play this in my dorm grill all of the time) and "That Boy". Thank you I tunes! And we are coming up to the 30th anniversary of John Lennon's death. We can remember him best by listening to his music.

I had a really late introduction to the Beatles and had a lot of fun becoming acquainted before my trip to the U.K. last year. It kind of felt like I couldn't go there without being acquainted.

As for favorites, I've got lots, but "Here, There and Everywhere" always makes me feel happy and sad and desperately in love (even at the times I don't have anyone to be in love with).

Today, my favorite is "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". George was my fave of the fab four, so I lean more towards his songs. Tomorrow I may be in a different mood, so I might say "A Day in the Life".

When I was 2, my favorite was "She Loves You". My mother says that I used to sing "yeah, yeah, yeah" in the middle of church. She was embarassed because everyone there found out Sister Bowman listened to rock and roll on the AM radio.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about "She Loves You" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand". There are so many!!

You might find the odd group that came up with one song that is better then anything that the Beatles did but it is the quality of the songs that they created over their caree that makes the difference. 12 songs, how do you a list of 12 songs. I have a 160G Ipod which is full of music...Oh well here we go and in no order (I can’t manage that)

Julia
I’m so tired
Happiness
Something
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
You’ve got to hide your love away
I’ve just seen a face
This Boy
I’m Down
I saw her standing there
Do You want to know a secret
Nowhere Man

Ask me in an hour and you would probably get six changes ask me tomorrow and you would probably get 12

P.S in general Beatles covers are poor but a few that I think hit the mark

Fiona Apple (How appropriate a name) - Across the universe

The I am Sam - soundtrack

Love the Beatles and how ironic is that we are watching a Beatles special on tv right now? My favorite song is probably Nowhere Man!
