Mackinac Bridge Walk

When I was a teenager, my family had a tradition of driving up to Mackinaw City on Labor Day and walking the Mackinac Bridge. For those of you who are not Michiganders (see poll on side), the Mackinac Bridge is the bridge that connects the upper and lower peninsulas that make up Michigan. It is five miles one way and the only day you can walk across it is Labor Day. It's very fun and a ton of people take advantage of the opportunity to do the walk.

I haven't done it since I was a teenager and I was thinking this might be a good year to reinstate the tradition. Katherine (my sister) and I are thinking about doing it so if any of you are interested, let me know! Either leave a comment or e-mail me. Oh, and in case you were wondering, you take a bus across then walk back so don't worry, it's not a ten mile walk.

If you want to know more about the bridge walk, here's a link with the details! Side note: I just read something scary on that link. On the list of things "not allowed" on the bridge walk they've included umbrellas! I don't even want to think about someone flying off the bridge Mary Poppins style! (Do you think that's why they listed them??)

I think doing that walk would be the trifecta of all my anxieties:

claustrophobia, acrophobia, and aquaphobia...

oh, and exercise-phobia.

Maybe I should come and it would be like a Dr Oz intervention. :)

Man, I loved doing that walk! OK, I was a little young when we first started doing it, and may have griped a little, but I have mostly fond memories! We'd better get lots of fudge while we're up there. I'll be needing it in the next few weeks!!

P.S. I voted for "Michiganian" and am apparently the only one who feels the same way. I mean, Michigander is great, but I do feel like a duck sometimes when I'm called that.

Oo, oo, oo. I have to go this year to complete my "I love Michigan" experience. What's the plan? I want to go too!!

I'll be honest. Driving across the bridge for the first time earlier this year freaked me out completely. I am however tempted by the concept of walking over it. However, this is not the year for me. So if you do reinstate the tradition, count me in for next year.

Ah what a good idea. I walked the bridge before, back when I was young. I remember complaining it was too long. It was awesome though. Wish I could go!

I remember one time when we were walking across the bridge watching a wall of water coming across Lake Huron toward us. We were right in the middle of the bridge and knew that we weren't going to escape it, but we had our rain ponchos so we didn't get completely soaked. But it was always fun!! p.s. I also prefer Michiganian [speaking as a native Michigander] so you're not alone, Katherine.
